Sports Eye Safety Tips for Champions

Sports are a fantastic way to stay active, have fun, and challenge yourself. But just like with any physical activity, there’s a chance of injury. And one area that’s often overlooked? Your eyes!

Every year, thousands of people experience eye injuries while playing sports.  The good news is that most of these injuries are preventable with proper eye protection. So, whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a weekend warrior, here are some essential sports eye safety tips to keep your vision on the winning track:

Gear Up for the Game:

  • Ditch the Regular Glasses: Your everyday glasses or sunglasses might be great for looking sharp, but they won’t shield your eyes from impact.  Regular glasses can shatter and cause more damage in an accident. Invest in proper sports eye protection made from ultra-strong polycarbonate, a plastic that can take a hit.
  • Pick the Perfect Protection: Different sports have different risks.  For high-impact activities like basketball, racquetball, or baseball (especially batting), you’ll need protective goggles or sports-specific glasses with polycarbonate lenses.  Sports like hockey and cricket require a full helmet with a face shield. 
  • Don’t Forget UV Protection:  Sun exposure can damage your eyes over time, even on cloudy days. Look for sports eyewear that blocks out 99% of UVA and UVB rays to keep your eyes healthy.

Get a Pre-Game Checkup:

  • Eye Exam Essentials:  Regular eye exams are important for everyone, but especially for athletes. An eye doctor can check your vision, identify any underlying conditions, and ensure your sports eyewear prescription is up-to-date.
  • Know Your Risks:  If you wear contacts, discuss contact lens safety with your doctor during your eye exam.  Contacts can pop out during play, so having a backup pair of glasses is a smart move.

Play Smart, Stay Safe:

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings:  Always be mindful of your fellow players and the equipment being used. Avoid unnecessary risks and follow the safety rules for your sport.
  • Maintain Your Gear:  Regularly inspect your sports eyewear for cracks or damage.  A scratched or loose lens can compromise protection. If your eyewear is worn, get a replacement to ensure optimal safety.
  • Don’t Rub! If you get something in your eye during play, resist the urge to rub!  This can further irritate or scratch your eye.  Seek medical attention immediately.
