Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): Specialized Neonatal Eye Care at DLEI

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a Retinal disease that affects premature infants, especially those born prematurely at less than 31 weeks or with a weight of less than 1.5 kg at birth. In ROP, there is development of abnormally formed blood vessels in the Retina that can lead to scarring, Retinal detachment, or irreversible vision loss if left untreated timely.

At Dada Laser Eye Institute (DLEI), we are attuned to the unique needs of premature infants and provide advanced, compassionate care for preemies at risk for ROP.

Why ROP Screening Is So Important

Premature babies require ongoing eye exams since their Retinas have not matured completely at birth. Early detection is essential in the case of ROP. If left untreated, ROP can lead to:

  • Severe vision loss
  • Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)
  • Crossed eyes (Strabismus)
  • Total blindness

We collaborate with Pediatricians and NICUs to offer early Eye evaluation, usually in the initial weeks of birth.

Diagnosis and Management

Our Retina Specialists monitor Retinal growth using equipment like RetCam imaging and indirect Ophthalmoscopy, typing out the stage of ROP.

Treatment includes:

  • Laser treatment – to suppress abnormal vessel growth
  • Anti-VEGF injections – to control vessel development
  • Surgical intervention – in advanced stages for retinal detachment

Our Pediatric Retina team is trained to handle the smallest patients with the greatest care.

At DLEI, we’re committed to safeguarding the vision of every child from the very start. With timely screening and modern treatment, most babies with ROP can grow up with healthy eyesight.
