Diagnosis
The gold standard for identifying and assessing macular holes is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). It gives cross-sectional views of the Retina in high resolution.
Treatment: Vitrectomy
Pars Plana vitrectomy is the most effective treatment. In this Microsurgery:
- The vitreous gel is cut out
- A gas bubble is placed to flatten the macula
- The hole closes slowly as the retina heals
Recovery
- Face-down positioning is required post-surgery for a few days
- Vision usually resolves over weeks to months
