When Is Vitrectomy Required?
Vitrectomy is usually the treatment of choice for many Retinal disorders, including:
- Retinal detachment
- Diabetic vitreous hemorrhage (Bleeding into the vitreous from Diabetic Retinopathy)
- Macular hole or epiretinal membrane (Macular pucker)
- Vitreomacular traction
- Eye trauma
- Endophthalmitis, an internal eye infection
These disorders can have a severe effect on vision, and early vitrectomy will avoid permanent damage.
How the Procedure Works
During the Surgery, the vitreous gel is gently extracted and replaced with a bubble of gas, silicone oil, or balanced salt solution based on the type of disease.
This provides a clear area for the Retina to be fixed and assists in:
- Improving visibility and access for repair
- Clearing blood or infectious material
- Healing and improving Retinal function

After the Surgery, patients are instructed on correct positioning—particularly in the case of using a gas bubble—to keep the Retina positioned correctly until the healing process is complete.
